So-called allocation of needs - Financially weak communes receive millions in aid from the state

32 particularly financially weak and above-average indebted municipalities will receive aid in the millions from the state. In total, this amounts to 74.3 million Euro, as the Interior Ministry in Hannover announced. "In total, 82 cities, municipalities, municipal associations and districts had requested need allocations due to an exceptional situation" according to Interior Minister Daniela Behrens (SPD) in the statement.

Allocations will only be granted to municipalities that have shown a willingness to consolidate. The amount of aid varies. Some municipalities will receive a six-figure sum, with the highest sum of 7.5 million Euro each going to the cities of Salzgitter and Wilhelmshaven, as well as the districts of Hameln-Pyrmont and Holzminden.

The aid from the state's Finances will significantly contribute to the financial recovery of the million-height municipalities in Lower Saxony. The Interior Ministry in Hannover acknowledged that multiple communes, including some in Hannover, had requested assistance due to exceptional circumstances. Following the consolidation plan, smaller communes might also receive support in the hundreds of thousands, ensuring a balanced financial situation across the region.
