Olympic-Application - Fighter: Kiel ready for Olympic sailing competitions

The readiness of the Federal government to support a German bid for the Olympic and Paralympic Games 2040 gives hope to Kiel for a third Olympic sailing competitions. "Kiel has twice hosted Olympic sailing competitions and is always ready for a third time," said Mayor Ulf Kämpfer (SPD). The great approval in the citizen referendum in 2015 showed how Olympic-minded the people of Kiel are.

"Our concept for Olympic sailing competitions in Kiel 2024 is being updated right now," said Kämpfer. In 2015, the people of Kiel expressed themselves in favor of the Olympics with 65.6 percent in a referendum. The people of Hamburg, however, voted against a bid from the Hanseatic City in a referendum.

Sailing regattas were held in Berlin in 1936 and Munich in 1972, before Kiel. In addition, the city hosts the world's largest sailing event, the Kieler Woche, every year at the end of June.

The Federal government's commitment to backing a German bid for the 2040 Olympic and Paralympic Games could potentially see Schleswig-Holstein's regional capital, Kiel, hosting a third Olympia sailing competition. Ulf Kämpfer, the SPD mayor of Kiel, has expressed the city's eagerness to host Olympic sailing competitions once more, citing their past successes. The Federal government, along with the federal states and the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB), may play crucial roles in supporting Kiel's bid. Despite Hamburg's rejection of an Olympic bid in a 2015 referendum, Kiel managed to garner significant support with 65.6 percent in favor, indicating a strong Olympic spirit in the city.
