Fifth worker dead after scaffolding collapses in Hamburg
The accident on a major construction site in Hamburg's Hafencity claims another late death. The worker, who has since been treated in hospital, succumbs to his serious injuries. It is still not clear why the shaft scaffolding in which the men were working collapsed.
Just over a week and a half after a fatal scaffolding collapse on a major construction site in Hamburg's Hafencity, a fifth worker has died. The man from Albania succumbed to his serious injuries in hospital late on Wednesday evening, a police spokesman said.
On Monday last week, scaffolding extending over several floors collapsed in an elevator shaft in a large building shell in Hafencity, burying five workers. Four men died immediately, the fifth was rescued with life-threatening injuries and was taken to hospital.
According to the police, the cause of the scaffolding collapse is still unclear. There are no concrete findings as yet, said the spokesman. The investigation is ongoing and is expected to continue for some time.
The scaffolding collapse triggered a major operation by the fire department and rescue services that lasted around one and a half days. According to their own statements, they initially worked inside the shaft filled with scaffolding debris at the risk of their own lives in order to reach the trapped workers. Three dead and the injured man were pulled out in a comparatively short time. The recovery of the fourth victim, however, took until the evening of the following day.
Despite the ongoing investigation, the international construction industry is paying close attention to the series of misfortunes in Hamburg. The most recent fatality occurred at the same construction site where misfortune struck just over a week and a half ago.
