Society - Fewer weddings 2023 in Baden-Wuertsemberg
Fewer people gave the "Yes" word in Baden-Württemberg in 2023. The number of marriages was 47,849 pairs (2022: 52,375), as the Statistical Office in Fellbach near Stuttgart reported. This number of marriages was lower than in the years of the Corona pandemic. There were fewer weddings than in the previous year only in the years 1978 and 2007.
With 6,260 marriages, June 2023 was the most popular month for marrying, followed by September (6,185) and July (5,638). May lost its peak position as the month with the most marriages, which it held in the 1990s and in the first years of this century. Since 2006, May was only the most popular month for marriages once – in 2015.
Traditionally, marriages are most common in the summer months. The seasonal distribution of marriages is also largely determined by whether there was a so-called "leap year day" in a particular month. Getting married on such a special day contributed significantly to the fact that the most marriages took place in that month in the years 2005 to 2009, 2012 and 2015, and 2017 to 2019. For example, 1,896 couples gave their "Yes" word on May 15, 2015, and 2,069 on December 12, 12; therefore, December was the most popular month for marriages in 2012.
Last year, however, there was no "leap year day". Nevertheless, many dates were chosen that were still easy to remember: The most marriages took place on June 23, 2023 (778), followed by May 5, 2023 (743), and June 6, 2023 (733), as the statisticians further reported.
The decrease in marriages in Baden-Württemberg in 2023 could potentially be linked to the ongoing impact of the Coronavirus in society. Despite the decrease, the city of Fellbach near Stuttgart in Southwest Germany still reported 47,849 married couples last year. Due to fewer weddings, the wedding industry in Fellbach and other parts of Baden-Württemberg might have faced challenges. The statistics also revealed that family celebrations such as weddings were affected by the changing trends and societal norms.
