The proportion of industrial employees in Hamburg has decreased in the 20-year comparison. According to the Statistical Office North with its seat in Hamburg, which announced this in a special publication, approximately eight percent of all gainfully employed persons worked in industry in 2023. In 2004, around ten percent of the gainfully employed were active in this sector. The Statistical Office, as usual, does not name the reasons for this development.

Most industrial employees in Hamburg work in automobile manufacturing. The second largest group repairs and maintains machines, followed by machine builders. The number of industrial employees in Hamburg increased significantly in the previous year - by 3.7 percent.

The reason for the special publication is the 20th anniversary of the Statistical Office. In 2004, the offices of Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein were merged. According to the information provided, this was the first merger of such offices at the federal level.
