- Fewer births in Saxony

The number of births in Saxony continues to decline. "Compared to the previous year, the number dropped by 3,137 live births or 10.7 percent", the Statistical Office in Kamenz announced.

The period from 1992 to 1997, during which fewer than 30,000 births were recorded each year, is known as the "birth trough of the 1990s", from which the country only briefly emerged. According to the latest figures, the birth rate has been below 30,000 since 2017 and 2022. "With 26,194 live births in 2023, this trend continued and reached its lowest level since 1995", the Statistical Office added.

While the number of births from mothers with German citizenship approached the lowest level of 1994, the number of births from foreign mothers continued to increase. In 1994, 773 children were born to mothers with foreign citizenship, compared to 4,595 in the previous year.

According to preliminary figures, the birth rate continued to decline in the first quarter of 2024. According to the figures, approximately 5,930 children were born alive between January and March. This represents a decrease of 550 births compared to the previous years' months, or a decrease of 8.4 percent. The trend since 2016, according to the Statistical Office, is largely due to the steady decline in the number of women of childbearing age.

In the 1990s, Saxony experienced a significant decrease in births, reaching a "birth trough" with less than 30,000 births annually from 1992 to 1997. Interestingly, despite the decline in births among German mothers, the number of births from mothers with foreign citizenship significantly increased during this period. For instance, in 1994, only 773 children were born to mothers with foreign citizenship, but this figure more than doubled to 4,595 the following year. The trend of declining birth rates continued into the 2020s, with just 26,194 live births in 2023, marking the lowest level since 1995 in this German state, Kamenz.
