Justice - Fewer attacks on employees in custodial justice
The number of attacks on employees in the penal institution in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has decreased. According to the information provided by the Ministry of Justice in Schwerin to the German Press Agency upon request, there were three attacks last year, which is seven fewer than in 2022. In 2019 and 2018, there were also three attacks each recorded. In 2020, there were nine attacks, and in 2021, there were eight. According to the reports, there was one attack in the first half of this year.
Regarding the issue of work incapacity, no statistics are kept because of the fortunate rarity of such individual cases, a ministry spokesperson stated. Affected employees would go to the crisis intervention team. Currently, there are approximately 700 people employed in the penal institution in the northeast, according to the ministry.
The number of attacks on employees in the custodial care has also decreased, according to the Social Ministry. There were two attacks in 2023, down from four the previous year. The annual number has been consistently between two and four attacks since 2018. However, there were already three attacks in the first half of this year. Immediately after the incident, special security measures were ordered against the inmates or patients, as stated by the two ministries. A criminal complaint was also filed.
People are placed in custodial care if a court deems them psychiatrically impaired or addicted. Currently, there are around 400 people in the country in such facilities.
