Fehmarn Sund Bridge for bicycles soon open

One must take the bus to go to Fehmarn with a bicycle. The works on renewing the suspension cables are ongoing, so it should reopen soon. However, it will still take a few weeks.

Infrastructure - Fehmarn Sund Bridge for bicycles soon open

The Fehmarnsund Bridge is expected to be usable again for pedestrians and bicycles from September, according to the project manager of Deutsche Bahn, Grit Scholz. This was shared by Schleswig-Holstein Economics Minister Claus Ruhe Madsen (CDU), who was informed about the progress of the work on the 61-year-old structure currently undergoing renovation. On the western side of the bridge, 31 of the 80 ropes have been replaced so far. The rope exchange is expected to be completed by the summer of the coming year, Scholz stated.

However, it will be necessary to reckon with lane restrictions for some time, as some areas on or near the road are still being used as construction sites for certain works. "Important is that, in all likelihood, we will be able to lift the lane shift – and thus the greatest risk point," said the project manager. In the coming year, the sanitation of the concrete pillars of the bridge will begin.

Fehmarn is the first stop on a four-day summer bike tour for the Minister. Considering the large construction sites in connection with the construction of the fixed Fehmarnbelt Crossing, Madsen appealed for understanding: "We are all aware that the construction phase will be associated with inconvenience – but with the support of our construction site coordinator and other responsible parties in the region, we will keep the impact as small as possible," he said.

Following the completion of rope replacement on the Fehmarnsund Bridge by German Railways, the minister of economics in Schleswig-Holstein expressed gratitude. The minister highlighted the upcoming four-day summer bike tour, mentioning Fehmarn as the first stop, despite the ongoing construction of the Fehmarnbelt Crossing. The economic policy of the CDU, in this context, aims to minimize the impact of these construction projects on traffic. The proposed Fehmarnbelt Bridge, once completed, is expected to significantly improve the infrastructure in the region.
