Storage - Federal Police reinforce security at BER (Berlin Brandenburg Willy Brandt Airport)
After the disruptions by Climate Activists of the Last Generation at German Airports, the Federal Police have strengthened the protection of Berlin-Brandenburg Airport (BER). This was confirmed by the Press Office of the Federal Police Directorate Berlin. Details could not be named, however, due to tactical reasons, a spokesperson said. This means that the authorities do not want potential perpetrators to adjust to this.
On Thursday morning, activists had reached the airport premises in Frankfurt am Main and disrupted air traffic for hours. Similar disruptions against the use of climate-damaging fuels such as kerosene had occurred at Cologne/Bonn Airport on Wednesday. There were also such protests at Airports in London and Oslo. In Berlin, the Last Generation had organized a similar blockade at the end of 2022.
Subsequently, demands for stricter security measures and harsher penalties have been voiced. According to a spokesperson for the Frankfurt Airport, there is a security fence there that is technically secured and monitored with stripes.
- The Last Generation, known for their climate activism, staged a demonstration at Berlin-Brandenburg Airport (BER) last year, causing disruptions similar to those at airports in Frankfurt am Main, Cologne/Bonn, London, and Oslo.
- In response to these incidents, Hesse, the German state where Frankfurt am Main is located, has increased the use of adhesive strips on its airport's security fences to enhance surveillance and deter potential interferences.
- The Federal Police, recognizing the need for enhanced security at Berlin's BER Airport, have implemented new strategies to counteract such unauthorized demonstrations and disruptions in air transportation.
- Amidst growing concerns about climate change and the use of kerosene in air transportation, the Climate Activists of the Last Generation have shown their resilience in organizing demonstrations at various European airports, including Berlin's BER, causing significant interference and disruptions.
- The interference at Berlin-Brandenburg Airport (BER) has drawn the attention of Germany's Federal Police, who are now working closely with Airport authorities to ensure tight security and adherence to regulations, ensuring the smooth operation of air transportation.
