FC Bayern slip up, the Wolves take full advantage
VfL Wolfsburg took advantage of FC Bayern's slip-up and knocked the German champions off top spot in the Bundesliga table in the last game of the year. Dominique Janssen only scored in the 83rd minute with a misplaced cross.
Former champions VfL Wolfsburg have regained the lead in the women's Bundesliga table from champions Bayern Munich after four rounds. The Wolves took advantage of Munich's loss of points in the surprising 1-1 draw with relegation candidates 1. FC Nuremberg the day before to close out the tenth matchday in the northern duel with Werder Bremen with a lackluster and late 1-0 (0-0) and, after their fourth win in a row, are now one point ahead of the defending champions for the winter.
Wolfsburg's winning goal, tellingly, came from a misplaced cross by Dominique Janssen just seven minutes before the final whistle. Given the way the game had gone beforehand, VfL coach Tommy Stroot's team were delighted with a very fortunate victory.
For long stretches of the encounter, Wolfsburg seemed more inhibited than motivated by the unexpected opportunity to return to the top of the table. The seven-time title winners' play was characterized by coordination problems. A disallowed Werder goal in the first half and a post goal by Bremen after the break meant that the hosts, who had dominated the cup round of 16 clash 5-0 the previous month, were lucky twice. Until Janssen's lucky shot almost from the touchline, the home side's final offensive had also been miserable.
When the season resumes after the winter break on the last weekend in January, the "half-time championship" will be decided in a long-distance duel between Wolfsburg and Munich. Wolfsburg have to play away at SGS Essen, while Bayern host TSG Hoffenheim.
