Fatal shooting at school: Investigation at full speed

Following the fatal shooting at a school in Offenburg, the police investigation is continuing at full speed. On Friday, officers will return to the school to secure evidence, a police spokesperson said in the morning. It was not possible to comment on any new findings for the time being.

The previous day, a 15-year-old is said to have shot a fellow pupil of the same age at a special needs school. The latter died of his injuries shortly afterwards. That evening, the police and the public prosecutor's office announced that the German suspect had been remanded in custody on suspicion of manslaughter.

According to dpa information, the teenager had more ammunition with him. Because an adult who happened to be present detained the 15-year-old until the police arrived, further acts were presumably prevented. According to the information, the adult was authorized to be in the school - but was not a teacher.

"According to the current state of affairs, a personal motive is possible," the statement said. No further details were available on Friday morning. It was also initially unclear where the 15-year-old had obtained the handgun.

In addition to the more than 300 emergency services, several emergency counselors were also on site after the crime. They looked after the children, their parents and the teachers. Those affected will also receive help in the days that follow. "On the part of the city, we are offering all the help we can to support the affected parents, their children, teachers and educators as well as the psychologists from the police and emergency pastoral care workers from the aid organizations in the coming days," said Head of Schools Hans-Peter Kopp.

The Waldbach School is a special education and counseling center with a focus on learning. Pupils are taught in 15 classes. According to the city of Offenburg, the school will remain closed on Friday.

The investigation into the crime at the school is focusing on potential motives, as a personal motive is considered possible. Regrettably, this tragic incident has led to the closure of the Waldbach School, which is a special needs institution.
