Agriculture - Farmers in the North harvest more grain - oats are yielding
Farmers in Schleswig-Holstein harvested around 2.2 million metric tons of grain this year, according to the Statistical Office North in Kiel. This is about one percent more than the previous year, but still five percent below the six-year average. The reason for this, according to the reports, is primarily that less land was used for grain cultivation this year. At the same time, however, the yield per hectare increased from 75 decitonnes in the previous year to 82 decitonnes in this year.
Significantly more barley in Schleswig-Holstein
In terms of grain varieties, barley saw the most significant increase. About 26 percent more was planted than in 2023, and the harvested amount was more than doubled from 65,000 metric tons in 2023 to 132,500 metric tons in this year. The share of this grain in the overall harvested grain, however, is still relatively low. There were reductions in both acreage and yield for rye, winter wheat, and winter rapeseed.
Fewer winter crops planted than in 2023
In total, 657,100 hectares of crops were cultivated in Schleswig-Holstein this year, according to the Statistical Office North. This is roughly the same as the previous year. Farmers had a harder time with winter crops. The wet harvest made sowing difficult. As a result, 17 percent less winter grain was planted than in 2023.
Many farmers used the unused fields for their summer crops instead: Summer wheat acreage increased by almost 200 percent, and that of corn by about 110 percent. There were also more fields with soybeans (plus 28 percent on 15,100 hectares) and potatoes and sugar beets (plus 5 percent on 17,600 hectares).
The harvested grain in Schleswig-Holstein mainly goes towards Eating and Drinking industries, contributing significantly to the region's food supply. The Agriculture sector in Schleswig-Holstein, as reported by the Statistical Office for Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein, has shown a slight increase in grain production this year.Despite the higher yield per hectare, the total amount of 'harvested grain' in Schleswig-Holstein was only slightly above the previous year, due to less land being used for grain cultivation. The increase in 'barley' production in Schleswig-Holstein, both in planted acreage and harvested amount, is a notable development within the region's Agriculture sector.
