Crime - Explosion near Washington: Suspect presumed dead

Following the violent explosion in a residential building not far from the US capital Washington (local time), police are assuming that one person is dead. "Human remains were found at the scene," said Arlington Police Chief Andy Penn.

It is believed to be the 56-year-old resident of the house who is suspected of having triggered a police operation on Monday by firing shots from a flare gun and of being responsible for the explosion in the building.

Prior to the incident, police had been called to the house in Arlington, Virginia, after the man fired 30 to 40 shots from his home. The officers then obtained a search warrant to enter the building. They tried to make contact via loudspeaker, it was said. However, the man had barricaded himself in the building. When the police tried to enter the building, the man fired again - then the explosion suddenly occurred.

The background to the crime is the subject of further investigations. Officers involved in the operation suffered minor injuries. The location of the incident is southwest of Washington and about 15 minutes by car from the center of the capital.
