heavy transport - Everything on schedule - Transport of naval submarine is running

The decommissioned Marine-U-Boat U17 has now arrived at the Technikmuseum Sinsheim (Rhein-Neckar-Kreis) and is waiting there for further transportation. The nighttime journey over the Autobahn A6, which was partially closed for some hours, went smoothly, according to a police spokesperson. The boat, which was transported with a heavy-duty truck, is now being guarded by a private security service on a parking lot between Rhein-Neisser-Land and Ittlingen (Kreis Heilbronn).

The A6 was previously closed between midnight and 5 am between the interchanges Sinsheim Süd and Heilbronn/Untereisesheim in both directions, as the Autobahngesellschaft ViA6West had announced earlier. Corresponding detours were marked. There were no major traffic jams reported by the police. The boat is expected to continue its journey on Tuesday, according to the museum's website.

Transport escorted by police

The 350-tonne U-Boat was transported on the Neckar and on land from Speyer towards Sinsheim in the past few weeks. During its journey through smaller towns and finally over the A6, it was accompanied by police vehicles or even police motorcycles, as the police spokesperson explained further.

Onlookers often admired the boat - even at the A6, some had come right up to the safety barriers, he said. Since the section was closed, there was no danger. The transport was moving at a steady pace. The U-Boat is expected to arrive at the museum itself on July 28, according to the organizers of the Technikmuseen Sinsheim Speyer. The U-Boat is scheduled to go on display in the museum in Sinsheim starting from summer 2025.

Project costs around two million Euros

The Autobahn A6 will also be closed in the night between Sunday and the coming week between the interchanges Sinsheim and Sinsheim-Steinsfurt for the transport with the low loader. This was announced by ViA6West further.

The approximately 50-meter long U-Boat has been in service since 1973 and was decommissioned by the Navy in 2010. More than a year ago, a portal crane lifted U17 in Kiel onto a floating dock, which then brought the steel giant to Speyer. There, among other things, weight was removed. The entire project is estimated to cost the Technikmuseen a total of around two million Euros and is mainly financed with donations.
