Basketball in Paris - Even without a family card: Wagner-parents at Olympia present
Axel Schulz will be present at the Olympic Games and follow the US superstars closely. However, it's not the former professional boxer, but the father of basketball players Franz and Moritz Wagner. Together with his partner Beate Wagner, the parents, who gained fame at the 2023 WM, will also follow the way of their own sons this summer.
"What shines brighter are these eyes"
"We start in London, then in Lille and finally in Paris", said Beate Wagner about this journey these days. In London, the last test against the USA took place on Monday. "We will be present at all the games in Paris. That wasn't easy. You don't get a family card." The brothers can each give away one free ticket to a person and must buy additional tickets if necessary.
Both Franz (22 years old) and Moritz (27) were part of the World Championship team last year and are aiming for a medal at the Olympics this summer. "The gold medal is what shines. But what shines even brighter are these eyes. Those are happy children. That's important for us parents", said Schulz in Manila with his distinctive Berlin dialect.
"Franz can be just as wild"
In public, the younger Franz is often perceived as the introverted type, and the older Moritz as the louder one. "That's actually more of an outside image. I'm discovering more and more similarities as they get older. Moritz is just as thoughtful and strategic. Franz can be just as wild as his brother", said Beate Wagner, who published the book "Glitter in Their Eyes" about her two sons for the German Press Agency this summer.
The Wagner brothers not only play together in the national team but also in the NBA with the Orlando Magic. "If you look closely at the game, you can see what Moritz shows in Franz", said the mother. For Franz Wagner, the Olympic debut is coming up. His brother Moritz was already there in 2021 in Tokyo.
