  1. European Elections

Essential information for June 10: European elections, Apple's updates, successful hostage rescue, immigration issues, and floating trash.

Far-right political groups are projected to make historic gains in the European Parliament after three days of voting across the EU's 27 member states. French President Emmanuel Macron, in response to an EU exit poll predicting a strong showing for France's far right party, dissolved parliament and called snap elections. The ideological shift is expected to have significant implications for the EU, which is dealing with challenges such as conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, immigration, and climate change.

  1. Apple and OpenAI Partnership

Apple is set to announce a partnership with ChatGPT creator OpenAI and unveil its first batch of generative AI tools, which could breathe new life into the iPhone. Experts believe that the AI capabilities will significantly enhance Apple's Siri personal assistant, potentially enabling the virtual assistant to execute complex tasks like finding a specific image or answering in-depth questions about the weather, current events, or trivia. The future AI tools could learn user preferences and character traits and respond accordingly. It is unclear whether these new AI features will be accessible on older iPhones or only on upcoming models planned for release later this year.

Why Macron's calls for snap election may be a 'big gamble'. French President Emmanuel Macron has dissolved his country's parliament and called snap elections after an EU exit poll showed a historic surge for the French far-right. CNN's Melissa Bell has the details.
  1. Hostage Rescue Operation

On Saturday, Israeli forces carried out an operation to rescue four hostages held by Hamas in Gaza after three weeks of careful planning. However, the result was far from perfect as the operation left a trail of destruction in Gaza, killing scores of Palestinians. The most recent casualty figures from Gaza authorities estimate 274 dead and almost 700 injured, raising concerns that the situation could worsen. Over 70 hostages taken during a deadly Hamas attack on October 7 are believed to be still alive. Despite ongoing negotiations, a deal to exchange hostages for Palestinian prisoners has stalled recently.

U.S. President Joe Biden is considering implementing a policy to grant legal status to long-term undocumented immigrants married to American citizens. Although the specifics have not yet been decided, officials are looking into a legal framework that would protect a group of undocumented immigrants from deportation and permit them to work legally while they pursue citizenship. The announcement comes shortly following President Biden's decision to limit access to asylum for migrants entering the country illegally, with certain exceptions.

  1. Trash Balloons from North Korea

On Sunday, North Korea once again released a swarm of trash-filled balloons into South Korea as a response to South Korea's decision to resume loudspeaker broadcasts carrying anti-North Korean propaganda. This could potentially escalate tensions as Kim Jong Un's sister and government representative threatened further retaliation if the broadcasts continue. The North has already dispatched over a thousand balloons containing garbage into South Korea, prompted by South Korean activists sending balloons carrying flyers and prohibited items northwards.

Video shows deadly impact of Israel’s rescue operation in Gaza. CNN’s Paula Hancocks takes a look at the deadly impact of Israel’s hostage rescue operation in Gaza. Gaza's health ministry says at least 274 Palestinians were killed in the operation and hundreds were wounded. The Israel Defense Forces disputes those numbers, saying it estimates the casualties were “under 100.” CNN cannot independently verify death tolls from the enclave due to the lack of international media access.
