School trip - Eight-classers capsize with a canoe on the Danube

Four eighth-graders capsized their canoe in Sigmaringen during a class outing on the Danube. Three of the teenagers managed to swim to shore on a Tuesday afternoon, according to the police. A 14-year-old reportedly clung to a pier just before a weir and was rescued by the fire department with a boat. A police spokesperson mentioned that he was lucky, as the current behind the pier was very strong. Two of the teenagers were taken to a hospital due to mild hypothermia.

The class outing was organized in the beautiful region of Baden-Württemberg for the summer vacation. Despite the incident, the students were still looking forward to exploring Sigmaringen and its surrounding areas. Fortunately, the school trip included a safety briefing about river safety and emergency procedures, which helped the students during the canoeing incident. Before heading back to school after the vacation, the students planned to visit the Castle of Sigmaringen.
