Traffic in Stuttgart - Due to construction works - S-Bahn-Stammstrecke closed during holidays
Due to construction work on the Stuttgart S-Bahn, passengers are required to adjust their travel plans for longer durations and switch to replacement services during the summer holidays. Starting from the evening of July 26th until September 6th, there will be no trains running on the tunnel stretch between Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof and Vaihingen. This affects the following stations: Hauptbahnhof (deep level), Stadtmitte, Feuersee, Schwabstraße, Universität, and Österfeld, which will not be served during this period. Trains of the S-Bahn will thus end at the above-ground part of the Hauptbahnhof.
This is the fourth interruption during the summer holidays, according to the German Railways. This year, the Transport Association Stuttgart (VVS) plans to carry out cable works to convert the track to the new digital technology. In addition, there are construction works for the S-Bahn's connection to the tunnel towards the new S-Bahn station Mittnachtstraße, which is being built as part of Stuttgart 21.
Replacement buses and shuttle trains are planned
Between the Hauptbahnhof and Vaihingen, replacement buses will operate, stopping at the closed S-Bahn stations. From August 2nd, there will also be a shuttle train service between Hauptbahnhof and Böblingen, which will stop in Vaihingen.
Apart from the S-Bahn, trains of the long-distance and regional traffic are also affected by the closure. Since tracks for the S-Bahn are required in the above-ground part of the Hauptbahnhof, not all regional and long-distance trains can stop there. For example, trains on Line RE 8 (Stuttgart-Heilbronn-Würzburg) will only stop at or depart from Bietigheim-Bissingen. Similarly, trains on Line MEX 17. Trains to and from Zurich will start and end at Stuttgart-Vaihingen instead of the Hauptbahnhof.
- Despite the closure of German Railways' S-Bahn between Stuttgart Main Station and Vaihingen due to construction, commuters can substitute their railway journey with replacement bus services.
- The summer vacation travel plans of many commuters will be impacted by the extended journey time on the S-Bahn, as trains will not be running through the tunnel stretch between Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof and Vaihingen.
- Initiatives to carry out cable works and construct the S-Bahn's connection to the tunnel towards the new S-Bahn station Mittnachtstraße in Baden-Württemberg are part of the extensive renovation project Stuttgart 21.
- Apart from the S-Bahn, other railways such as long-distance and regional traffic are also affected by the closure, causing disruptions in the schedules for passengers traveling to and from Stuttgart Main Station.
- During the summer holiday period, when tourist traffic is high, commuters are advised to consider alternative modes of transportation, such as bus and shuttle train services, to reach their destinations in the city of Stuttgart.
