Animals - Drought confirmed in Teltow-Flaming district
In the community of Blankenfelde-Mahlow in the Landkreis Teltow-Fläming, bees have been found to have the dangerous bee disease "American Foulbrood". The district announced this. With immediate effect, the community will be declared a quarantine zone for bee-keeping, as stated.
The veterinary office advised that all bee colonies and hives within this quarantine zone should be inspected by a district veterinarian or district veterinarian without delay for American Foulbrood. In addition, movable bee hives may not be removed from their location.
Honey is harmless to eat
Furthermore, bee colonies, living or dead bees, combs, comb parts, comb debris, wax, honey, food reserves, bee houses and used equipment should not be removed from the hives, as stated. In addition, no new bee colonies or bees may be brought into the quarantine zone.
For humans and fully grown bees, the bacterial brood disease is not dangerous - even honey or other bee products can be consumed without concern. However, since the disease destroys bee brood, it is a notifiable animal disease. Adult bees cannot become ill themselves, but they can spread it, leading to mass deaths of bee colonies.
