A drunk driver caused a power outage in the Schmalkalden area. The man had gotten behind the wheel of his car after a night of partying and heavy alcohol consumption, according to the police report. However, his drive lasted only a few meters before his car collided with a power distribution box, a garden fence, and a hedge. As a result, parts of Niederschmalkalden were left without power. A local bakery was also affected by this.

A breath alcohol test given to the driver yielded a result of 1.88 promille. The man, who was slightly injured in the accident, was taken to the hospital for a blood draw.
