process - Driver sentenced for attempted murder
The District Court of Detmold sentenced a 44-year-old man from Bad Salzuflen to three and a half years in prison for attempted murder. He had rammed a motorbike in front of him with a transport truck in January 2024 and left the severely injured accident victim lying on the road. The judgment is not yet legally binding. The German man can file a review (Revision) with the Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe.
The 18-year-old was discovered unconscious on the road by a following car driver minutes after the collision. She had sustained bone fractures and a brain hemorrhage. It was established in the second trial day that the accident perpetrator had noticed the collision and recognized it as a motorbike. This had become entangled in the front of his transport truck and was dragged along.
The judges assumed that the 44-year-old wanted to hide his flight, that he was drunk at the wheel, and therefore saw the concealment as fulfilled. He is to be sentenced for attempted murder in conjunction with unlawful removal from the scene of the accident and reckless bodily harm.
On the first trial day, the 44-year-old first remained silent, but then admitted that he had heard a bang. Why he did not stop but drove a few more kilometers to his workplace instead, he could not answer. Only there did he discover the entangled motorbike, according to his statement. This statement was not disputed by the Landgericht.
