Fighter bomb - Disarmed World War II bomb in Hanau
In Hanau, a 250 kilogramme Bomb from the Second World War was defused - a few hours after it was discovered. A safety perimeter of 800 meters was set up around the discovery site. Approximately 3700 people were affected by the evacuation in the vicinity of Pioneer Parks, as the city of Hanau announced. The city set up an emergency shelter.
In the evacuation area, there was also a refugee shelter. In addition, employees of two larger companies had to leave their workplaces. There were also restrictions in bus traffic, as well as the federal highway 43 and a land road being closed.
City councillor and fire department chief Isabelle Hemsley thanked all those involved and said: "We can now refer to very professional and well-practiced structures due to the increase in bomb finds in Hanau."
During the evacuation, residents sought shelter in local schools, as they were used as temporary emergency shelters. The consequences of finding the bomb were far-reaching, disrupting businesses in Hanau, including a major electronics manufacturer located near Pioneer Parks.
