Disaster relief - Diakonie: Less Donations than Record Year 2022

The Bavarian Diakonie disaster relief collected over 6.14 million Euros in donations last year. This is significantly less than the 10.6 million Euros collected in the year of the conflict beginning in Ukraine, as reported by the Diakonie. "People in our region are aware of the many crises in the world and are taking action," said Sabine Weingaertner, President of the Diakonisches Werk Bayern.

Half of the donations

Nationwide, donations for the evangelical aid organization have nearly halved to 49.3 million Euros compared to 2022. The Russian attack on Ukraine triggered an immense wave of solidarity and led to record donations in 2022. The result in 2023 is still encouraging: it is almost double that of the year before the Corona pandemic.

A lot of money was donated by the people in Germany for the victims of the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria in February 2023 - the Diakonie collected 22.5 million Euros for this.

Public funds

Apart from donations, the Diakonie disaster relief is also financed by funds from public donors such as the Foreign Office and the European Union. In 2023, these funds accounted for roughly one third of the total income. Overall, the Diakonie disaster relief was able to allocate 97.1 million Euros for aid projects with 111 local partner organizations and international partners in its global program work.

The Diakonie disaster relief is the aid organization of the Protestant churches in Germany. It supports victims of natural disasters, war, and displacement who cannot alleviate their plight on their own.

  1. Despite the decrease in donations, the Diakonie disaster relief in Bayern still managed to collect a significant amount during the record year of the conflict in Ukraine.
  2. The Russian attack on Ukraine led to an unprecedented outpouring of solidarity from people in Germany, resulting in a record year of donations for disaster relief organizations like Diakonie.

  4. The Diakonie disaster relief works closely with local and international partners to offer aid to victims of natural disasters, conflicts, and displacement, as seen in their record-breaking work in Ukraine and ongoing projects in Germany and beyond.
  5. If you're interested in supporting the Diakonie and their disaster relief efforts, consider making a donation to aid those in need, as your contribution can make a significant impact, especially during emergency situations and disaster protection initiatives.
