Extremism - Desk reports more antisemitic incidents in Brandenburg
The Antisemitism Office Brandenburg documented 377 antisemitic incidents in 2023, according to the Fachstelle in Potsdam at the State Chancellery. This is an increase of 173 cases compared to the previous year. These incidents include threats, insults, and acts of violence. However, there was also a better source and data situation, it was stated during the presentation of the Monitoring Report.
The increase in case numbers is alarming, stated the chairman of the Kreuzberger Initiative against Antisemitism, Dervis Hizarci. "There is a great threat." However, the reporting behavior in society is also changing.
Hizarci reported on accounts of Jewish women and men who are threatened and have anxiety about displaying their Jewish identity on the street. Memorial sites for dealing with NS-history were also affected by a multitude of antisemitic incidents. In addition, experts indicate that Right-wing Rock plays a role in football.
In response to the escalating antisemitic incidents, a community event to promote understanding and unity was organized in the city of Brandenburg, Germany. This incident follows a series of antisemitic acts reported in Potsdam, further highlighting the concerning trend of extremism linked to religion in modern-day Germany. Additionally, efforts are being made to address the issue of antisemitic rhetoric in Right-wing Rock music at football matches to combat the growing problem of antisemitism in sports culture.
