Demo against femicide after the death of a 21-year-old in Hanover
Hundreds of people have demonstrated in Hanover under the slogan "Against Femicide" following the violent death of a 21-year-old woman. Police estimated the number of participants to be in the mid three-digit range, a spokeswoman said on Thursday. The participants lit candles on Wednesday evening and held up placards that read, for example, "Femicides are not isolated cases".
Femicide means that women are killed because of their gender. The most common form is killing by partners or ex-partners.
Passers-by discovered the 21-year-old woman with serious stab wounds outside her home in the Vahrenwald district at the beginning of last week. They, as well as an emergency doctor who was called, tried to help her. However, the woman died of her injuries on the spot.
In the apartment, the police discovered the 21-year-old German suspect, who had also been stabbed. He is suspected of having stabbed the woman several times. He was provisionally arrested, taken to hospital and underwent emergency surgery. The alleged murder weapon was seized. An arrest warrant was issued for the man while he was still in hospital. It was unclear whether he had inflicted his injuries himself.
He has since been transported to a correctional hospital, said a spokeswoman for the public prosecutor's office. He is being investigated for manslaughter. According to the public prosecutor's office, the two 21-year-olds had been a couple for around two years. The 21-year-old had separated from her partner shortly before the crime.
The demonstration against femicide in Hanover highlighted the need for action in addressing crime related to gender-based violence. Emergency services were called to the scene when the woman was discovered with critical injuries, illustrating the seriousness of such emergencies.
