Hannover Regional Court - Defendant requests milder sentence for mother's murder

After the murder of a 74-year-old woman in Hannover, the defense has requested a milder sentence for the daughter of the senior citizen than the prosecution. The defendant's lawyer stated in the Hanover Regional Court that his client is less culpable due to her long-term severe depression. The 50-year-old woman had confessed in the trial to killing her mother on December 29, 2023, and setting their shared apartment on fire on New Year's Day. The defense argued for a prison sentence of six years and five months for murder and arson.

In her final statement, the accused spoke again at length. "I never wanted to kill my Mother," the woman said. She had struck her mother unconscious with a hammer, intending to interrogate her, and then planned to take her own life. The 37 stab wounds of the victim, the defendant explained, were due to her panicking.

Both the prosecution and the defense saw the murder motive as premeditated, as the 74-year-old woman was surprised in her sleep. The prosecution demanded a total sentence of 14.5 years, and they also consider the woman mentally impaired due to her psychological condition. The verdict is to be announced in the afternoon (2:00 PM).

  1. The case of the 74-year-old woman's murder in Hannover is being handled by the Lower Saxony's Public Prosecutor's Office in Germany.
  2. The daughter, who is currently undergoing trial in the Hanover Regional Court for Criminality, is facing charges of Mord and Arson.
  3. Despite the severe depression she has been dealing with, the defendant, a 50-year-old woman, is still expected to serve a significant sentence, as per the proposal of the Public Prosecutor's Office.
  4. Interestingly, the Lower Saxony's Public Prosecutor's Office, like the defense, also believes that the woman's mental state, resulting from Depression, played a role in the crime.
  5. This high-profile case is set to be heard by the Higher Regional Court Hannover, which will announce its verdict in the afternoon.
