Death toll rises after earthquake in the Philippines
Following a strong earthquake in the Philippines, the death toll has risen to 8. In addition, 13 people were injured, according to the disaster management agency on Sunday. "Most of the victims were hit by falling debris," said Edgar Posadas, a spokesman for the agency at the weekend. The magnitude 6.8 quake struck the south of the Philippines on Friday.
According to the authorities, dozens of houses were destroyed and roads damaged, and there were also power outages. Photos on social media showed department stores with collapsed ceilings and stores with goods lying on the floor. A video showed chairs and tables in a fast food restaurant in a shopping center shaking violently while people screamed.

The epicenter of the quake was located northwest of Sarangani Island in the sea, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology. It occurred at around 4 p.m. local time at a depth of around 72 kilometers. The island is located around 1700 kilometers south of the capital Manila. There had been no tsunami warning.
The island state is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, the most geologically active zone on earth. Volcanic eruptions and earthquakes frequently occur there. In 1990, a magnitude 7.8 quake caused severe devastation on the island of Luzon. More than 2,400 people died at the time.
The magnitude 6.8 earthquake in the Philippines caused numerous casualties, primarily due to falling debris, as the death toll continues to rise. The undersea tectonic quake off Southern Mindanao is another seismic event that the Philippines has recently faced.
