Storm - Cyclone reaches the Indian mainland
Cyclone "Michaung" has reached the Indian mainland with high wind speeds and heavy rainfall. At least twelve people died in accidents related to the rainfall in and around the metropolis of Chennai, as reported by the Indian news agency PTI, among others, citing local authorities on Tuesday. Earlier, thousands of people in coastal areas had been taken to temporary shelters for safety.
The large amount of water turned some roads into rivers that washed away vehicles, as television pictures showed. Helpers relied on boats and tractors, among other things, for the rescue work. The storm is expected to weaken by Wednesday, according to the Indian weather service. Some schools remained closed on Tuesday and fishermen were advised not to go to sea. A number of flights and trains were also canceled in the affected areas.
