Cologne Pride - CSD-Demonstration goes through Cologne
At Christopher Street Day in Cologne, over one million people are expected on Sunday. Around 250 groups with approximately 60,000 female and male participants, as well as 90 floats, will join the CSD Parade (starting at 11:30 AM) through the city center. The police are reportedly deploying several hundred officers to ensure the safety of the event.
The community aims not only to celebrate but also to draw attention to their causes. The motto is "For Human Rights. Many. Together. Strong". Before the start of the parade on the Deutzer Bridge (starting at 11:00 AM), among others, Federal President Bärbel Bas (SPD), Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD), and Culture Minister Claudia Roth (Greens) are scheduled to give speeches.
The CSD is reminded of events in 1969 in New York: Police stormed the "Stonewall Inn" bar on Christopher Street, triggering a several-day uprising among gay men, lesbians, and transsexuals. The Cologne CSD is one of the largest LGBTIQ community events in Europe. Similar in size is the CSD in Berlin.
