Scandal in the City Council Halberstadt - Cooperation with AfD: Free Voters expel members

The Free Voters in the Harz have expelled two city council members from Halberstadt from the party because they cooperated with the AfD. In the constituent city council session on Monday evening, the two elected city councilors of the Free Voters joined the AfD fraction, announced André Weber, chairman of the Free Voters Harz. A few months ago, a broad majority of members nationwide spoke out in favor of a cooperation ban with the AfD.

"The provocative cooperation in a joint fraction with the AfD, which is classified as reliably extremist against the constitution by the Verfassungsschutz in Saxony-Anhalt, is a flagrant and conscious breach of the principles of the Free Voters," said Weber. The chairman demanded that the two expelled members return their mandates in the city council of Halberstadt.

Communication Free Voters

The expelled city councilors had sought refuge in the AfD fraction after being ousted from the Free Voters in Halberstadt. This move was met with strong criticism from the Communist Party in Saxony-Anhalt, who saw it as a scandal in local politics. The act of cooperating with the AfD, deemed extremist, has led to split opinions within the Free Voters commune, sparking debates about the party's stance on extremism.
