Escape in Moringen - Continuing search for escaped man from custody

After the escape of a 26-year-old man from the correctional facility in Moringen near Northeim, the police are still searching for him. No new insights, said a police spokesperson. The man has been missing since Monday afternoon. According to police information, there is no danger to the population.

The man is believed to have left the correctional facility through the double door, according to previous knowledge. A car waiting nearby then took him away. This does not mean that the door was open, the Social Ministry stated. It is also not to be assumed that the man climbed over the door. The exact course of his escape is still being investigated. An employee immediately sounded the alarm, the police were informed and the pursuit was taken up.

In the correctional facility, according to judicial order, offenders with addiction or psychological problems are accommodated. A helicopter and a drone were immediately searched for the man after the disappearance.

The suspect is reportedly personally known to people in the Hanover region, according to the police. The officers launched a public appeal for tips on the whereabouts of the man from the population. In case of a direct sighting, the alarm should be called. The 26-year-old is reportedly 1.85 meters tall, slim, tattooed on the left forearm, has brown eyes and hair, and a scar under the left eyebrow. He was last seen wearing a black T-shirt, black jogging pants, and a black cap, as well as a belly pouch.

According to the Lower Saxony Ministry of Justice, the 26-year-old was sentenced to a prison term of four years and six months in Hanover after a robbery with particularly serious extortion. He had been in the correctional facility in Moringen since November 2020.

Further cases

According to the Social Ministry, in response to the escape of the 26-year-old, "an additional securing of the problematic gate area" was ordered in the first reaction. Further measures were to be tested.

In the younger past, there have been several similar cases: In November, a fugitive prisoner from Moringen was arrested in France, more than four months after his escape. The then 33-year-old was detained for dangerous bodily harm and coercion. In September 2022, the police arrested a fleeing prisoner in Celle after several days of flight. The 53-year-old had not returned to the correctional facility after an authorized leave.

The escape of the man from the correctional facility in Moringen occurred in the Lower Saxony region, specifically near Northeim. The police are still enforcing measures to locate him, as he remains missing since Monday afternoon. The suspected route of his escape is being investigated, with reports suggesting he may have used an automatic emergency call to alert authorities.
