The disruptions in several communes in North Rhine-Westfalen due to global Computer-Problems should be fixed by Friday afternoon. "Customers of South-Westphalia IT (SIT) are also affected by this issue," the company reported in the morning. However, the company could not say how many of the over 70 communes in NRW were affected or the extent of the damage. A spokesperson later added, that they expected to be able to fix the disruptions in all communes by the afternoon.

The cause of the disruptions is said to be a faulty update of an IT security solution from the manufacturer Crowdstrike, according to the Federal Interior Ministry. Crowdstrike confirmed the error and stated it had been fixed by midday. According to the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), the manufacturer of the affected security solution has communicated a "workaround" that affected parties should implement.

The SIT spokesperson described that now it's essential for the communes to follow this instruction and delete the faulty software update and install the corrected new file. It's to be expected that everything will be running normally again on Monday.

  6. Following the instructions from the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), the affected communes worked tirelessly to resolve the issue and restore normal operations by the end of the weekend.
