Traffic safety - Complaint filed: Association accuses senate of negligence
The association Changing Cities will force the Senate to act faster on the topic of bike path safety. For this reason, the organization announced that it has filed a complaint with the Administrative Court of Berlin (Az.: VG 11 K 580/24), as reported by the organization which campaigns and carries out projects for traffic transformation and above all the interests of cyclists. The Administrative Court confirmed the receipt of the complaint on inquiry from dpa.
Specifically, it concerns five Berlin streets, for which the association considers the order of protected bike lanes necessary. Applications have been submitted by affected parties, who use these streets for work or school, for example, half a year ago. In May, the Senate announced that the tests were almost completed. Since then, nothing has happened.
Five streets will receive secure bike lanes
The organization wants to oblige the traffic administration to build secure bike infrastructure on the Leipziger Straße in Mitte, the Schönhauser Allee in Pankow, the Hermannstraße in Neukölln, the Kaiser-Friedrich-Straße in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, and the Treskowallee in Lichtenberg.
"It is scandalous that the Senate administration is hopelessly behind in building secure bike lanes in the capital. Only 10.6 km instead of the planned 50 km were realized in the first half of 2024," criticized Paul Jäde from Changing Cities. "It is a tragedy that a dialogue with the CDU-led Senate administration must be forced through the courts – and a major flaw for democracy."
- The idleness in implementing the planned secure bike lanes on Leipziger Straße, Schönehauser Allee, Hermannstraße, Kaiser-Friedrich-Straße, and Treskowallee has led Changing Cities to resort to filing a complaint at the Administrative Court.
- The Administrative Court's hearing on Changing Cities' complaint regarding the slow construction of secure bike lanes on five Berlin streets is anticipated, as the traffic administration is expected to be held accountable for their delay in addressing traffic safety issues.
- The progression of traffic safety initiatives in Berlin seems to be stalled, as the Senate's lack of action in constructing secure bike lanes on five major streets has led to the courts becoming a platform for pressing the issue and ensuring traffic safety for cyclists and affected parties.
