Migration - Commission deals with contentious deportation

The controversial deportation of a 31-year-old man from Saxony to Serbia is now a case for the Hardship Commission. A corresponding application was filed by a member of the Refugee Council, as the Office of the Saxon Commissioner for Migration and Refugees reported. Previously, the MDR had reported on this.

A precise date for the hearing is not yet available. First, documents need to be submitted. With this concrete case, the Hardship Commission is dealing with it for the first time.

The committee consists of nine members, who are sent by the Churches, Welfare Associations, Non-Governmental Organizations, and state institutions. The Saxon Commissioner for Migration and Refugees chairs the commission. The commission does not decide on a deportation. If there is a positive vote with a two-thirds majority, the Interior Minister is asked to grant a residence permit. However, he can reject this.

Saxony's Interior Minister Armin Schuster (CDU) had suspended the deportation of the man on Monday after harsh criticism and referred it to the State Directorate. According to the Saxon Refugee Council, the man was supposed to be deported to his parents' homeland the same day. He himself is said to have been born in the Netherlands. However, there are contradictions in his documents, as it is registered under another name. Politicians of various parties and citizens had protested against the deportation.

The 31-year-old man's deportation case, originally from Saxony, is currently being handled by the emergency commission in Serbia, following a request made by a refugee council member. This is the first time the Hardship Commission, composed of representatives from churches, welfare associations, non-governmental organizations, and state institutions, is handling a case of this nature. Despite the controversy surrounding his deportation, Saxony's Interior Minister Armin Schuster (CDU) has temporarily halted the process due to public backlash.
