energy transition - Climate protection in the hospital: Country urges expansion

Hospitals and medical facilities, from the perspective of the state government, should save more energy and rely on Electricity from renewable sources. "Hospitals and nursing homes are sensitive areas that must function reliably even in crisis situations," said Health Minister Ursula Nonnemacher (Greens) during a visit to the Havelland Clinics in Nauen. Investments in renewable energies are the best way to protect against price fluctuations for fossil fuels. Burning oil, coal, and gas releases CO2, which heats up the Earth.

Energy-efficient building renovation, air conditioning in heat periods, and the emission of anesthetic gases are "relevant Climate protection levers in hospital operations," said Brandenburg's Environment Minister Axel Vogel (Greens) during the visit. It makes sense, for example, to produce the required electricity renewably and self-sufficiently.

With a quick-help program, the state supports hospitals, rehabilitation clinics, and nursing homes in making their energy supply sustainable. For this, 65 million Euros are available in total in 2023 and 2024.

  1. The energy crisis has highlighted the importance of efficient energy use in hospitals, particularly in reliance on renewable sources like electricity.
  2. Ursula Nonnemacher, the Health Minister of Brandenburg, emphasized that hospitals and nursing homes should prioritize energy savings and rely on clean electricity for reliable operations during energy crisis situations.
  3. Climate protection initiatives are crucial in hospital operations, and measures such as energy-efficient building renovation, efficient air conditioning, and reduced emissions of anesthetic gases can significantly contribute to these efforts, as noted by Brandenburg's Environment Minister Axel Vogel.
  4. The development of sustainable energy solutions for hospitals, rehabilitation clinics, and nursing homes in Brandenburg is supported through a quick-help program, with a total of 65 million Euros allocated in 2023 and 2024.
  5. As part of the energy transition, hospitals in Brandenburg should consider generating their required energy renewably and self-sufficiently in order to minimize their reliance on fossil fuels and contribute to mitigating the climate crisis.
