State Theater - City council approves theatre subsidy for Congress Hall
The Nuremberg City Council will vote on Wednesday in its last session before the summer break on the proposal for a backup venue for the State Theater at the Congress Hall. Four offers have been submitted for this. The city administration, city councilors and experts have examined which one should receive the contract in a secret procedure. The vote on their recommendation at the end of the city council session also takes place behind closed doors. Only then is the public informed. The session begins at 3:00 PM.
Additionally, the city council will vote on the financing of the entire cultural area at the Congress Hall. In the round building, besides rooms for the State Theater on more than 7000 square meters, ateliers, workshops, and event spaces for the free arts and cultural scene are to be created.
The costs for the entire project were estimated by the city council at 211 million Euros. According to the resolution draft, these could now rise to approximately 296 million Euros. The costs for the rooms of the State Theater and the backup venue significantly exceed the forecasts.
The National Socialists built the Congress Hall on the former Reich Party Rally Ground from 1935. According to their plans, 50,000 people were to cheer the NS leaders during their speeches. However, the construction work was later halted due to the war. Instead of the planned 70 meter height, only about 40 meters were achieved. To this day, only a horseshoe-shaped raw construction remains, which was later intended to house stairs and dressing rooms. Only the facade made of massive granite gives an impression of the originally planned form.
