Brands - Children igniting straw bales - 72 firefighters in action

Two boys, ten and twelve years old, used a matchbox to ignite straw bales and thereby triggered a large response from the fire department in Pepelow, district of Rostock. In addition to the straw, stacked wood and the roof of a barn on a farm also caught fire, according to the police. The fire department was able to prevent the fire from spreading to agricultural machinery and a diesel tank farm on the premises.

The police estimated the damage caused by the fire on Tuesday evening to be around 50,000 Euros. One of the boys had informed his father when a strong smoke development was noticed. The father then immediately called the fire department, which was present with 72 emergency vehicles. The criminal police are investigating despite the minor involvement of the children for arson.

The children's reckless use of a matchbox led to the burning of hay bales, which then spread to the farm's wooden stack and roof. Thankfully, the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern fire department executed a large-scale deployment to contain the fire, saving the farm's agricultural machinery and diesel tank farm from damage. The police, after assessing the damage, revealed it to be approximately 50,000 Euros, prompting an investigation by the criminal police for potential arson, despite the minor role of the children.
