Child dies in school bus crash in Saxony
It is very slippery in the Ore Mountains. This repeatedly results in minor and serious accidents. In many cases, the damage is minor. In a recent case, things unfortunately turned out differently. A child dies in a collision between a school bus and a winter road maintenance vehicle.
A child was killed in an accident involving a school bus in the Ore Mountains this morning. The victim was a pupil, according to the police. Two adults, including the bus driver, were also seriously injured. At least ten other schoolchildren were injured and taken to hospital as a precaution. The police did not disclose the ages of the boy who was killed or the injured.
According to a police spokesperson, the bus collided with a winter road maintenance vehicle in Sehmatal. The bus then crashed head-on into a tree. The impact was so violent that the front two meters of the vehicle were completely destroyed.
The cause of the accident has not yet been determined. The police's initial assessment is that the road was slippery at the time of the accident. The accident service is on site and investigating, a police spokesman said.
On Tuesday morning, rain led to black ice on numerous roads at high altitudes in Saxony. "The precipitation was converted from snow to rain in the morning by a warm layer of air at around 1500 meters," explained Florian Engelmann from the German Weather Service on request. If the rain then falls on cleared, exposed roads, which have a temperature below zero degrees, especially at high altitudes, it becomes extremely slippery.
