Changeable weather and snow in places

Low pressure system "Niklas" will cause changeable, sometimes stormy weather in the coming days and will also bring the first snow to some areas.

The snow line will drop to medium altitudes on Friday. On Saturday night, some of the showers could even fall as snow down to low altitudes, says meteorologist Sebastian Schappert from the German Weather Service (DWD) in Offenbach. "Nevertheless, it won't be enough for sledging in many places." The snow would melt too quickly due to the temperatures and the heat still present on the ground.

However, the situation is different in the Ore Mountains and especially in the Alps. "Precipitation accumulates there, which usually falls as snow and can last for a long time," says Schappert.

The forecasts in detail:

Thursday will see mostly cloudy skies with occasional rain or drizzle. South of the Danube, however, it will often remain sunny and dry after the fog has lifted. Highs will reach 9 to 13 degrees in the northern half and 4 to 8 degrees in the south. A moderate to fresh wind will blow from the southwest to west, with gusts of wind expected in the north. At sea and on higher peaks, there may be heavy squalls or gale-force winds.

For Friday, the DWD is predicting a rapid change of sun, clouds and numerous showers. There may be isolated short sleet storms. Above 400 to 500 meters, the precipitation will mostly fall as snow. Longer-lasting snowfall is expected in the Alps. Temperatures will reach 4 to 10 degrees. A strong gusty wind will blow from the west, later shifting to the northwest. Gale-force gusts are expected near the showers and heavy squalls on the North Sea and in the higher mountains.

According to the forecast, it will remain changeable on Saturday with lots of showers - in the west as rain, otherwise as snow or sleet. In the north and north-east, the sun will shine at times. There will be persistent snowfall in the Ore Mountains and the Alps.

The changeable weather predicted for Friday might turn into snow showers, affecting areas below medium altitudes according to the meteorologist's forecast. Despite this, it's unlikely to be enough for sledding due to the quick melting temperature and remaining heat on the ground.

The winter weather in the Alps is expected to be different, as meteorologist Sebastian Schappert from DWD mentions, with precipitation accumulating to form snow that could last for a long time.
