Alcohol at the tax - Cdup coverage for Redmann after drunken driving
After being stopped by the police in a drunken state while riding an E-roller in Brandenburg, CDU Landes- and Fraktionschef Jan Redmann received support from the party. Thuringia's CDU chief Mario Voigt spoke out in support of him. "Mistakes are human – what matters is how one deals with them," Voigt told the "Rheinische Post" in Düsseldorf. "Here, Jan Redmann has shown greatness." The new Brandenburg state parliament is to be elected on September 22, three weeks after the Thuringia state election.
The 44-year-old CDU's top candidate in Brandenburg stated that he was stopped by the police during a short trip with an electric roller from a meeting to his home in Potsdam at night with a breath alcohol level of 1.3 promille. He informed the media about the incident some hours later.
Pressure from coalition partners
However, some questions remain open. Redmann spoke of a general traffic control. The "Märkische Allgemeine" cited an internal police report that Redmann was stopped "due to his driving behavior." It is still unclear how the police justified the control in the night.
Redmann had proposed Voigt as a member of the CDU federal party executive in February. Both are nearly the same age. The federal CDU also reacted. CDU General Secretary Carsten Linnemann warned on Welt TV that mistakes only happen once. However, he also praised Redmann's handling of the affair.
The coalition partners in Brandenburg are putting pressure on Redmann. SPD Landtagsfraktionschef Daniel Keller questions Redmann's suitability as a candidate for the Minister-President post if it turns out that there was no routine control. The Greens-Fraktionsvorsitzende Benjamin Raschke sees significant unanswered questions and demands a clear explanation.
