Criminality - Cash machine explosions: 23-year-old in custody
After a series of ATM bombings in Münsterland last November, investigators are now reporting a successful arrest. A 23-year-old Dutch suspect has been in Detention since July 18th, according to the Münster Police.
During the meticulous search for evidence at the crime scenes, investigators were able to secure DNA at a crime scene in Haltern. The comparison with police databases led to the identification of the suspect. Based on further police knowledge, it is believed that the 23-year-old was an active member of a criminal group as a bomber.
This group is reportedly responsible for several crimes, including those in Haltern, Marl, and Nienberge. At the crime scenes, the same getaway vehicle was observed. The investigation commission was able to obtain a European Arrest Warrant against the 23-year-old.
Last week, the young man was arrested in the Netherlands for theft. During the search of his residence in the Netherlands, data carriers and several mobile phones were secured. They are now being evaluated. It is currently being checked whether he will be extradited from the detention in the Netherlands to the German judicial authorities.
The DNA evidence collected at the Haltern crime scene matched databases in North Rhine-Westphalia, implicating the suspect in the ATM bombings. The police believe that this suspect's activities extended beyond Münsterland, as they suspect his involvement in criminality in other cities like Marl and Nienberge. The similar vehicle used in these crimes was a key piece of evidence in linking the various incidents.
