Car crashes into beer garden in Australia - Five people now dead
One day after a car crashed into a beer garden in Australia, the death toll has risen to five. Among the victims were two children, a nine-year-old girl and an eleven-year-old boy, Australian media reported, citing the police.
Five other people were injured on Sunday evening when a 66-year-old driver drove his SUV off the road and across the lawn of the beer garden in the small town of Daylesford. People were sitting there eating and drinking in the sun. Daylesford in South Australia is a spa town popular with tourists around 110 kilometers northwest of Melbourne.
Accident or deliberate act?
"The exact circumstances of the collision are not yet clear and the investigation is ongoing," the police said. The driver is still to be questioned. An alcohol test was negative, Australian media wrote. It was initially unclear whether it was an accident or a deliberate act. The Royal Daylesford Hotel, in front of which the incident took place, is home to one of the oldest pubs in the city. It is located next to a busy traffic circle in the town center.
The five fatalities were reported to be two families: a 38-year-old man and his son, and a 44-year-old woman, her 30-year-old partner and their daughter.
Victoria's Premier Jacinta Allan thanked all helpers on X (formerly Twitter). "My thoughts are with all those injured and with the friends and families of those who have tragically lost their lives," she continued.
The investigation into the car accident at the Daylesford beer garden, which resulted in five fatalities and several injuries, is still ongoing to determine if it was an accident or a deliberate act. Despite the negative alcohol test for the 66-year-old driver, the exact cause of the traffic incident near a busy traffic circle in the town center remains unclear.
