Philippines - Bus crashes into ravine - number of victims revised to 17
According to new information from the authorities, fewer people have died in the serious bus accident in the Philippines than initially reported. According to civil protection and the police, 17 and not 28 passengers were killed when the bus plunged into a ravine on Tuesday.
A total of 28 people were on the bus. The eleven survivors were injured, some of them seriously, said Broderick Train, head of the local civil protection department. It took emergency services ten hours to rescue all the occupants from the wreckage.
The vehicle had left the road on a dangerous bend in a mountainous area near the town of Hamtic on the southern tip of the island of Panay. According to initial investigations, the vehicle crashed into a concrete barrier and then plunged into the ravine. There have already been several accidents at this point, said the provincial governor. The accident happened around 450 kilometers south of the capital Manila.
