French President Emmanuel Macron is enticing tech companies to increase their investments in his nation, with success. He's already reeled in the first big catch, with both Amazon and Microsoft signing aboard.
American companies Microsoft and Amazon have declared significant investments in France. Microsoft intends to construct a new data center and expand two existing ones at a total expense of four billion euros, as per a company announcement. Furthermore, Amazon revealed intentions to allocate 1.2 billion euros to its Amazon Web Services division and their mail order business logistics in France, according to the French presidential office.
These announcements are part of a string of investment decisions that have emerged or are slated to surface at the Choose France event, starting on Monday. President Macron has invited representatives from multiple tech companies to Versailles to draw investments.
Infrastructure for AI Growth
As reported, Microsoft is looking to establish a data center in Mulhouse, Alsace, and extend existing centers in the capital region and near Marseille. CEO Brad Smith commented on the magnitude of the investment, stating it's the biggest Microsoft has ever made in France.
Microsoft is a trailblazer in the field of artificial intelligence and has been heavily investing in its development and the required infrastructure for quite a while. In Germany, Microsoft announced additional data center expansion and construction for 3.2 billion euros in February.
Regarding Amazon, the French presidential office essentially verified media reports about prospective investments in France. These reports depict more than 3,000 new positions to be created in the e-commerce industry. Additionally, investment announcements were made by pharmaceutical behemoths Pfizer from the USA and Astrazeneca from the UK, as well as Canadian French fries producer McCain.
