State election campaign - Berlin's Ex-CDU Finanzsenator Kurth at Brandenburger AFD

Former Berlin CDU Finance Senator Peter Kurth visited the campaign kickoff of the AfD Brandenburg. Kurth attended the event in Werder (Havel) on Friday as a guest. Ex-Senator Kurth listened to the speeches of AfD Landeschef Rene Springer and AfD top candidate Hans-Christoph Berndt. He also held an AfD campaign flag.

Former Senator and Deputy

In the summer of the previous year, a meeting of radical right-wingers took place in Kurth's apartment. AfD MEP Maximilian Krah presented his book "Politics from the Right" there. The extreme right activist Martin Sellner and the party and faction leader of the Berlin AfD, Kristin Brinker, were also present.

Kurth wrote to "Spiegel" at the time that he did not know all the participants in his apartment, but "personally friends with several members of the AfD."

Former Senator and Representative

The Berlin CDU stated that Kurth had left the state association in the fall of 2023. Berlin's governing mayor and CDU state chairman Kai Wegner expressed shock and sadness about Kurth's development in January.

Kurth was Berlin Finance Senator from 1999 to 2001. From 2001 to 2006, he was a deputy in the Berlin House of Representatives. In 2009, he failed as a CDU candidate in the election for Mayor of Cologne. Since 2008, he headed the waste disposal industry association BDE. After the right-wing contacts became known, the association distanced itself from him.

AfD wants to take over the government

The AfD in Brandenburg plans to campaign with a "policy for the Germans" for the takeover of the government at the state election in the fall. "It's time that we free the middle of society from the hostage situation of the ruling parties," said Springer at the campaign start. The goal is "to be the strongest force on September 22, to raise the question of power and to assume government responsibility." The AfD is leading in the polls. However, they have not yet identified a potential coalition partner.
