General overhaul in the shipyard - Beauty treatment for Hamburger Museumship Rickmer Rickmers
Lay off and head to the Yard: The museum ship Rickmer Rickmers left its long-established berth at the Landungsbrucken on Thursday evening. It was towed by two tugs to the yard on the other Elbe side. There, the 128-year-old cargo carrier will be brought back into service until mid-August. Originally, it was supposed to change sides on Wednesday evening, but that was prevented by strong winds.
Time to set sail, please!
The most important task in the coming weeks in the yard is the "shaving" of the ship's hull, as a spokeswoman for the German Press Agency said. In recent years, a stubborn mussel growth has taken hold there and it needs to be removed again. "The mussels are the main concern of the overhaul."
Additionally, the thickness of the steel plates is to be measured at around 300 spots and reinforced if necessary. Several repainting jobs are also on the schedule. Three and a half weeks are planned for the work in the Norderwerft am Steinwerder.
According to reports, the traditional sailing ship was last in the yard for an overhaul eight years ago. In 2021, the Rickmer Rickmers did leave its berth - but only because it had run aground and the berth had to be dredged due to the grounding.
Makeover until 12th August
At the latest, the sailor is supposed to return to the Hamburg harbor on 12th August. The overhaul is expected to cost several hundred thousand Euros. The Rickmer Rickmers is financed through donations and admission fees. The 1896-built cargo carrier has had a permanent berth at the Landungsbrucken since 1987 and can be visited daily.
