Be careful on the roads: Slippery and frosty conditions in Germany
It will remain frosty in most parts of Germany towards the end of this week. Slippery roads are to be expected again and again.
"Freezing rain is still an issue across large areas of Germany," said a meteorologist from the German Weather Service (DWD) on Friday morning. The DWD issued an official icy weather warning for most of Germany, which is valid until 12.00 noon today. Especially in the very south, it could become "quite slippery". There is a warning of freezing rain for parts of Bavaria.
No serious accidents
During the night, however, it was mostly calm on the Bavarian roads. "It's slippery, but we haven't had any accidents," said a police spokesperson in the Upper Palatinate. In Upper Bavaria, there have only been "relatively few accidents involving snow and ice" so far, according to the Upper Bavaria South Police Headquarters. In the north of Upper Bavaria, too, there have been comparatively few accidents for the weather conditions, said a police spokesperson.
In Thuringia, the situation center reported a few trucks broken down due to the weather, otherwise it was quiet. "There are wintry road conditions, but no chaos," said a spokesperson for the situation center in Saxony. "The main roads and freeways have all been cleared, we have a few metal accidents on the side roads, but nothing out of the ordinary," said the situation center in Brandenburg. There were no reports of weather-related accidents in the north and west of Germany.
It remains frosty cold
The DWD is hardly expecting any more snow in these parts of the country today. But it will remain cold. "In the north and north-east, we can expect permafrost and highs between minus three and minus four degrees", said the meteorologist. In the south, there will be a little warmer air in some places and highs around plus two degrees. "In Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria, we can expect snowfall during the course of the day. At the very edge of the Alps, the precipitation may also fall as rain."
At the weekend, it will be freezing cold almost all over Germany. "Permafrost will be a common theme. It will only be frost-free during the day on the coasts, along the Upper Rhine and in southern parts of Bavaria," said the meteorologist. There will only be scattered snow.
Slippery roads due to the frosty conditions will continue to pose a risk for traffic in many parts of Germany. Despite the icy weather, thankfully, there have been no serious accidents reported in some regions, like Upper Bavaria and the Upper Palatinate. However, the German Weather Service (DWD) has issued an official icy weather warning, warning of potential freezing rain, especially in the south.
