Competition at FC Bayern - Bayern-Boss Eberl: No guaranteed starting spot for Kimmich
After several years as a performer, National player Joshua Kimmich could lose his starting spot at FC Bayern. The defensive midfielder must prove himself again, as Sport Director Max Eberl made clear. "Joshua is a very good player, but it's just generally true that professional football is a performance sport – we can't tell any player, 'You're the one who's set,'" explained Eberl to "Welt am Sonntag."
"I'm just saying what applies to everyone. We have exciting players at all positions and therefore many alternatives," added Eberl. In the current transfer phase, several players have come to Munich who could push Kimmich out: From Leverkusen, Josip Stanisic was recalled from his loan; the Croatian can play on the right defensive side. For the six-man position in the defensive midfield – where Kimmich himself prefers to play – Bayern bought their Portuguese wish player Joao Palhinha from Fulham for around 50 million euros.
Eberl said that new trainer Vincent Kompany would first take a look around. That could mean that Kimmich loses his place in the first team. "Joshua has made great merits for FC Bayern. However, every player at FC Bayern has to accept the fight for the starting position," said the Sport Director.
Interview after Kimmich's EM special leave
The 29-year-old national player still has a contract with the Bayern until the end of the new season. Since Bayern do not want to let contracts of top players expire and then lose them for free, it is possible that they will give Kimmich away this summer if he does not extend his contract. "We have agreed that we will talk to each other after his leave," Eberl announced.
Kimmich is still on vacation like other teammates who were in action for their national teams at the EM or the Copa America. At the training start in this week, the defender was therefore not present.
