Heavy transport - Autobahn blockade for transport of marine U-boat
Before the arrival of the decommissioned German Navy submarine U17 in Sinsheim (Rhein-Neckar-District), the A6 motorway will have to be closed for a heavy transport night-time. The Autobahn between the interchanges Sinsheim Süd and Heilbronn/Untereisesheim is expected to be closed from approximately midnight to 5 am on Sunday in both directions, as announced by the Autobahn company ViA6West. Appropriate detours will be signposted.
The 350-tonne submarine has been transported on the Neckar River and on land from Speyer towards Sinsheim in the past few weeks. According to the organizers of the Sinsheim-Speyer Technology Museums, U17 is expected to arrive on July 28. The submarine will be on display in the museum in Sinsheim starting from summer 2025.
The project costs approximately two million Euros in total.
For the transport with a low loader, the A8 motorway will also be closed in the night of the coming Sunday between the interchanges Sinsheim and Sinsheim-Steinsfurt from approximately midnight to 5 am in both directions, according to ViA6West.
The approximately 50-meter long submarine was in service since 1973 and was decommissioned by the Navy in 2010. A crane lifted U17 from the dock in Kiel onto a floating platform, which then brought the steel giant to Speyer initially. There, weight was removed. The entire project costs the Technology Museums a reported two million Euros and is mainly financed through donations.
