Heavy transport - Autobahn blockade for transport of marine U-boat

Before the arrival of the decommissioned German Navy submarine U17 in Sinsheim (Rhein-Neckar-District), the A6 motorway will have to be closed for a heavy transport night-time. The Autobahn between the interchanges Sinsheim Süd and Heilbronn/Untereisesheim is expected to be closed from approximately midnight to 5 am on Sunday in both directions, as announced by the Autobahn company ViA6West. Appropriate detours will be signposted.

The 350-tonne submarine has been transported on the Neckar River and on land from Speyer towards Sinsheim in the past few weeks. According to the organizers of the Sinsheim-Speyer Technology Museums, U17 is expected to arrive on July 28. The submarine will be on display in the museum in Sinsheim starting from summer 2025.

The project costs approximately two million Euros in total.

For the transport with a low loader, the A8 motorway will also be closed in the night of the coming Sunday between the interchanges Sinsheim and Sinsheim-Steinsfurt from approximately midnight to 5 am in both directions, according to ViA6West.

The approximately 50-meter long submarine was in service since 1973 and was decommissioned by the Navy in 2010. A crane lifted U17 from the dock in Kiel onto a floating platform, which then brought the steel giant to Speyer initially. There, weight was removed. The entire project costs the Technology Museums a reported two million Euros and is mainly financed through donations.

  1. The decommissioned German Navy submarine U17 is being transported towards Sinsheim in Baden-Württemberg's Rhein-Neckar-District, having previously navigated the Neckar River and land routes from Speyer.
  2. Visitors to Sinsheim-Speyer Technology Museums can expect to see the U17 submarine on display starting from summer 2025, following its arrival on July 28.
  3. To facilitate the heavy transport of the submarine, the A6 motorway will be closed from midnight to 5 am on Sunday between Sinsheim Süd and Heilbronn/Untereisesheim interchanges, as announced by the Autobahn company ViA6West.
  4. The heavy transport of the submarine on a low loader will require the closure of the A8 motorway in the night of the coming Sunday between Sinsheim and Sinsheim-Steinsfurt interchanges, according to ViA6West.
  5. The 350-tonne U17 submarine has an impressive length of about 50 meters and was in service from 1973 until its decommissioning by the Navy in 2010.
  6. Transportation of the submarine from the dock in Kiel to Speyer involved lifting it onto a floating platform with a crane, followed by weight reduction in Speyer.
  7. Appropriate detours will be signposted during the closures of the A6 and A8 motorways for the heavy transport of the U17 submarine to minimize any potential obstruction and ensure smooth travel for other road users.
