Snow chaos - Austria: 20,000 households still without electricity
According to energy suppliers, at least 20,000 households in Austria are still without power following heavy snowfall. In Styria, a high-voltage pylon was knocked down, causing a power outage in parts of the province.
The supplier Energie Steiermark reported that 265 stations were still down on Sunday morning. Thousands of households in Upper Austria on the German border were also still without power. Following the failure of mobile phone stations, it was also not possible to make calls with cell phones in the Styrian region, according to the authorities.
The snowfall subsided on Sunday and the situation on the roads eased. However, according to the ÖAMTC traffic club, numerous roads were still closed due to fallen trees. Train services were also still affected, according to the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB). The risk of avalanches in the mountains was high. Regionally, more than half a meter of fresh snow had fallen since Saturday.
